Did Tim Eyman violate campaign finance rules?
Questions:
Did Tim Eyman violate campaign rules/laws by not reporting $766,000 in supposed campaign contributions?
Did Tim take $766,000 from his campaign contributors for personal use?
Answer: NO
They weren’t campaign contributions and they didn’t go to anyone’s salary. Full disclosure was used to declare intent and usage for personal legal challenges and demands. At no time was there any miscommunication with donors or cross funding for political versus personal reasons.
Attorney General Bob Ferguson has been abusing his position as the AG to drag Tim through the legal system for 8 years. This is the same Progressive/Liberal AG that has sued the Trump administration 50 times, sued a florist, and sabotaged our $30 tabs utilizing the exact same language he wrote for a gun control bill.. apparently it was good enough to take our rights – but not to halt a tax the voters said no to TWICE.
The AG’s lawyers are paid by the taxpayers (they’ve unknowingly spent $2 million+ so far). Tim had to pay for his own lawyers (over $1 million so far)out of personal expenses over those 8 years. The only way he could afford that was to ask for help.
Is a check made out to “Tim Eyman Legal Defense Fund” a campaign contribution? It is not.
The friends and supporters who gave to Tim and his family ARE NOT THE ONES COMPLAINING. They responded to Tim’s requests for help and gave money voluntarily and directly to Tim and his family over the past 8 years to help them survive this persecution by donating directly to his legal defense through specific channels NOT tied to any campaign or political agenda.
In the past two decades, Tim has qualified 17 statewide initiatives for a public vote (11 passed) saving taxpayers over $46 billion. This amazing accomplishment was done at great personal and financial burden to Tim and his family (2018 “Eyman’s sells off retirement fund to kickstart $30 Tabs Initiative”, 2015 “Eyman takes out 2nd mortgage for 2/3 initiative”, 2011 “Eyman still in debt from 2/3 initiative”, 2010 “Eyman seeks help to recoup loan for 2/3 initiative”, and 2008: “Eyman mortgages house for initiative”, 2018 “Legal costs drive Eyman into bankruptcy”).
It’s noteworthy that Ferguson’s lawsuit specifically asks for a lifetime ban on Tim’s future political activity. This has nothing to do with potential campaign economic fraud – it has everything to do with trying to shut down Washington State’s most effective and vocal conservative activist.
Tim has dedicated his life to fighting for us and these personal attacks on him are completely false.
From: Tim Eyman
To: Friends who’ve helped me and my family over the years.

Thank you for helping me and my family survive Bob Ferguson’s vicious assault.
It’s been a rough 8 1/2 years. But thanks to you, we’re still here and we’re still fighting.

The AG’s investigation-litigation-persecution was always intended to break me and make it impossible for me to be politically active.
Ferguson must be absolutely furious that not only have I continued to qualify and pass our conservative initiatives, bird-dog the Legislature’s insatiable tax appetite, challenge Inslee’s emergency powers in court, but I also ran for Governor, the same office he covets.
Instead of breaking me, he’s super-charged me. As I told the Seattle Times on July 7, 2018: “What I know is that State Attorney General Bob Ferguson is trying to drive me out of politics, permanently,” Eyman said. “So you know what my reaction to that is? It’s to become as politically active as I have ever been in my life.”

For years, I’ve mailed letters, sent emails, and posted messages asking for help. Thousands of friends and strangers saw the AG’s abuse of power and helped us survive. Today the judge puts out his decision — regardless of what it is, the AG will appeal it, dragging this out for years longer.

Taking on Ferguson is a Herculean task. But it’s a challenge I have learned to embrace. We all have a limited time on this Earth and we’re all striving to do what is right for ourselves, our families, our state, and our country.
One of my favorite sayings: Find what you love to do and you’ll never work a day in your life. I’ve found that in the political arena. I know it is what I was born to do. And it’s only because of the faith and love and support and prayers of friends like you that I can continue to do it.
Thanks for considering my request for help. Best to you and your family.
Love,
Tim
