18 Senate Democrats betrayed their constituents on Monday
Monday’s vote was very educational. The 26 members of the Senate Majority Coalition Caucus reinstated the 2/3 tax rule while the 23 Democrat Senators fought tooth-and-nail and voted against it.
So, when it comes to raising taxes, every single Democrat legislator wants it to be easy to take more of the people’s money.
And that’s fine for the 5 Democrats from the 5 districts in Seattle: that’s what their constituents want.
But 18 Democrat Senators represent districts outside Seattle and their districts are packed with voters who overwhelmingly support the 2/3 protection:
| 19th district | Democrat | Brian Hatfield | 70% | |
| 44th district | Democrat | Steve Hobbs | 69% | |
|
Democrat | Mark Mullet | 68%
| 29th district | Democrat | Steve Conway | 68% | |
| 38th district | Democrat | John McCoy | 67% | |
| 49th district | Democrat | Annette Cleveland | 67% | |
| 24th district | Democrat | Jim Hargrove | 66% | |
| 3rd district | Democrat | Andy Billig | 66% | |
| 33rd district | Democrat | Karen Keiser | 64% | |
| 1st district | Democrat | Rosemary McAuliffe | 64% | |
|
Democrat | Marko Liias | 63%
| 11th district | Democrat | Bob Hasegawa | 62% | |
| 32nd district | Democrat | Maralyn Chase | 61% | |
| 23rd district | Democrat | Christine Rolfes | 60% | |
| 48th district | Democrat | Cyrus Habib | 60% | |
| 27th district | Democrat | Jeannie Darneille | 60% | |
| 40th district | Democrat | Kevin Ranker | 59% | |
| 22nd district | Democrat | Karen Fraser | 54% |
Every one of these 18 Democrat Senators betrayed their constituents on Monday. When forced to vote on reinstating the 5-times-voter-approved 2/3 protection, they chose to overrule their constituents rather than represent them.
It’s important that these 18 Senators hear from the citizenry. We ask each of you to send them an email. Write something like this (feel free to add more, tell ’em how you feel): “You all betrayed your constituents on Monday. Your opposition to reinstating the 2/3 protection was contrary to the voter mandate in your district. You’re elected to represent the people, not rule over them.”

When it comes to raising taxes, we’ve learned that there’s no such thing as a “moderate” Democrat. Or an “independent” Democrat. Or a “conservative” Democrat. There are only Seattle Democrats in the Legislature.
The 5 Senators elected in Seattle are doing a fine job representing their voters — Senators Hatfield, Hobbs, Mullett, and others should focus on representing their own voters in their own districts.
Seattle shouldn’t get 23 Senators, especially when those 23 have shown themselves to be completely obsessed with taking more of the people’s money.
Because of your support and help, we chalked up a tremendous victory for the taxpayers on Monday. But the fight over taxes isn’t over. We need your help to bird-dog the Legislature this year.
The price of liberty is eternal vigilance.
