Initiative 1366: short video and a few factoids as we celebrate its qualification
Please watch this video — it just a minute and a half long:
* Final count of voter signatures for I-1366 turned in: 337,954
* Quantity recommended by the Secretary of State: 325,000
* Chances it’ll be on the November ballot: 100%
* Number of times voters have approved 2/3 vote requirement for Legislature to raise taxes: 5
* Percentage of voters in 2012 approving 2/3 vote requirement for Legislature to raise taxes: 64%
* Number of counties in 2012 that passed the 2/3 vote requirement for Legislature to raise taxes: all 39 counties, including King
* Most accurate description of Initiative 1366 (Everett Herald, June 29th, 2015): “I-1366, the Taxpayer Protection Act, is designed to direct the state legislature to put a constitutional amendment on the ballot, an amendment to require a two-thirds vote of both houses of the legislature to raise taxes and majority legislative approval to increase any fee. The initiative would decrease the state sales-tax rate by one cent per dollar unless the legislature puts a proposed two-thirds-for-taxes constitutional amendment on a statewide ballot.”
* Best quote: “All the forces in the world are not so powerful as an idea whose time has come.” — 19th century author Victor Hugo
* Second best quote (this one by us): “Initiative 1366 is called the “Taxpayer Protection Act” for a reason: it’s all about protecting the taxpayers from Olympia’s insatiable tax appetite. Whenever people ask why our initiative is necessary, all we say is ‘Did you see how tax-obsessed Olympia was this year?'”
Check out our new photo — it was taken on July 2nd just before we turned in the I-1366 petitions to the Secretary of State’s office in Olympia:
