Every House Democrat represents Seattle; not a single Democrat outside Seattle represented his/her constituents on Friday

by | Feb 4, 2013

On Friday, there was a floor vote in the state house that was very educational.

Voters passed a law — Initiative 1185 — in November that requires a two-thirds legislative vote for tax increases.  The House Republicans wanted the same requirement put in the rules of the state house to reinforce our voter-approved law.  They forced the vote on Friday and every Republican voted for it and every Democrat voted against it

So we now know that every House Democrat represents Seattle; not a single Democrat outside Seattle represented his/her constituents on Friday.  10 Democrats are elected in Seattle and so it’s not surprising to see those 10 vote against the 2/3-for-taxes rule.  So all eyes were on the 45 Democrats who were elected in legislative districts whose voters overwhelmingly approved I-1185’s 2/3.  Were they going to vote yes on the 2/3-for-taxes rule and represent their constituents or were they going to represent Seattle instead?  We got our answer.  Not a single one of the 45 non-Seattle Democrats listed below kept faith with their constituents.  Not one.

Chris Hurst in the 31st, Monica Stonier in the 17th, Rep. Morrell in the 25th, Rep. Takko and Rep. Blake in the 19th, Rep. Sullivan in the 47th, Rep. Seaquist in the 26th, and Rep. Haigh in the 35th, if those 8 had voted ‘yes’ on Friday, it would have backed up their ongoing claim that they are a “conservative Democrat”, a “Roadkill Caucus Democrat,” a “different kind of Democrat.” Instead, their lack of support for Friday’s vote on the 2/3-for-taxes rule showed that there is only one kind of Democrat — a Seattle Democrat — when it comes to taxes.

There is only one direction Democrats want taxes to go — and that direction is up.

It is simply shocking that not a single Democrat out of those 45 chose to represent the people who elected them.  When it comes to taxes, every one of them is a Seattle Democrat — heart, mind, and soul:
