Go for it! Don’t let yourselves be bullied by the fat cats! Don’t be blackmailed by the business community! I urge you to listen to Socialist Council Member Kshama Sawant who said it so well: “This is a threat, an extortionary warning from Amazon that if you tax us, we will leave. … I think Amazon is perfectly capable of paying that ($25 million per year), even double or four times that amount.”
Sawant is the voice of Seattle and you need to listen to her. Don’t hold back, go for it!
Why? Because the bigger the head tax and the more arrogant and dismissive you are to the business community, the more likely it is they’ll consider doing a statewide initiative that prohibits state and local governments from imposing a head tax or payroll tax. We already have an initiative to do just that (Initiative 1638: https://www.sos.wa.gov/_assets/elections/initiatives/finaltext_1533.pdf). And the business community doesn’t have to use this one (they’re welcome to if they want it), anyone can copy the idea and sponsor the initiative under their own name. I’m just trying to show them that this is a winning strategy to overturn the Seattle City Council’s head tax when it inevitably passes.
This cycle, we’re completely focused on qualifying our initiative to “Bring Back Our $30 Car Tabs” (big announcement on that next week). So us also doing an initiative to “Stop the Head Tax” is unlikely. But the business community can easily co-opt Initiative 1638 (or copy it) and get it on the ballot themselves.
Just two days ago, we received the ballot title for Initiative 1638.
It reads: This measure would prohibit state and local governments from imposing employee-hours taxes (aka “head taxes”) or any payroll tax created after January 1, 2018, and prohibit the collection of revenue from such taxes. Should this measure be enacted into law? Yes [ ] No [ ]
Statewide, that’s a clear winner, especially when combined with a unified business community who’ll say in one voice: “Don’t let Seattle’s Socialists on the Seattle Clowncil kill our economy and destroy jobs in Washington state.”
So, members of the Seattle City Council, I urge you to go for it. Don’t hold back. Impose a massive jobs tax and show the business community who really calls the shots in Seattle.
Kshama Sawant is showing you the path to prosperity and the utopia that socialism has always delivered throughout world history.
Go big or go home.
