Eyman’s open letter to the Senate Majority Coalition Caucus: Pierce County shows roadmap
Dear MCC members:
Inslee’s $4.4 billion – $8 billion in tax increases is nuts. But you already know that. You’ve been shooting down his pie-in-the-sky crap for years. So his latest insanity is nothing new.
What is new is what happened in Pierce County last night. Republicans on the Pierce County succeeded in protecting taxpayers by utilizing their 2/3-vote-for-any-tax-increase rule. The MCC’s upcoming senate rule for the next session will accomplish the same thing.
Here’s what happened last night in Pierce County: for months, the Democrats on the County Council were pushing to raise the sales tax. Tremendous pressure was put on the Republicans to cave. But the 2/3 rule saved the day. In the final vote last night, Republicans Joyce McDonald, Dan Roach, and Jim McCune stood together and stopped that tax increase. Without the 2/3, the Democrats tax increase would have been imposed.
What was their primary argument against the sales tax increase? Sound Transit 3’s $54 billion tax increase has gobbled up all available tax capacity — there’s nothing left for anything else. And they’re right. And that argument applies at the state level too. Even if voters wanted higher taxes (they don’t), ST3 has cleaned out the cupboard, leaving it bare.
But what really saved the day in Pierce County was the 2/3-vote-for-any-tax-increase rule.
The 25 members of the MCC represent the 2/3 of voters who back the 2/3 vote requirement. The MCC’s senate rule requiring a 2/3 vote for any tax increase is totally consistent with what the voters have 6 times demanded. Every one of you comes from a pro-2/3 district. Your supporters and constituents are counting on you to protect them.
Learn from last night’s victory in Pierce County — those 3 Republican council members are heroes who provided the MCC with a roadmap to success protecting taxpayers. Adopt the 2/3 rule, stand together, and don’t raise any taxes because ST3 already took it all.

You can count on us to fight against state and local government’s insatiable tax appetite. The voters’ passage of our Initiative 1366 last year certainly shows that the people are in no mood for any tax hikes, let alone increases next year totaling $3.5 billion.
Petitions for “We Love Our Cars” I-869 have been sent out (if you need more, just email or call). Our polling shows it’s another big winner. Please help us make it a reality.
