Gregoire Opened Up Pandora’s Box — Vote Yes On I-976 And Let’s Close It Again

by | Aug 13, 2019

Big frown and thumbs down when Gregoire signed this bill into law:

Advice: DO NOT tuck your shirt in when you’ve got a belly roll 😊

In 1999, voters overwhelmingly passed Initiative 695 which repealed dishonest vehicle taxes and dishonest valuation schedule imposed by state government.

In 2002, voters passed I-776 which repealed the authority for dishonest vehicle taxes and the dishonest vehicle valuation schedule imposed by local governments

So voters said no to dishonest vehicle taxes not once, but TWICE!

In 2007, Gov. Chris Gregoire (“Queen Christine”) opened up Pandora’s box again when she signed a bill that re-empowered governments to start jacking up car tab taxes again. It was a $100-per-vehicle tax but it could only be imposed if the government put it on the ballot and allowed the voters to decide. I expressed my displeasure with that (but forgot to suck-in-my-gut):

For several years after that, not a single government put the tax increase up for a vote (they knew the answer would be no).

So they went back and asked the Legislature to amend that law to empower governments to unilaterally jack up car tab taxes without letting voters decide.

For several years after that, they didn’t.

But as time went by, more and more governments unilaterally imposed higher and higher car tab taxes.

It wasn’t the voters OK’ing them, it was politicians and bureaucrats jacking them back up.

Since the passage of those $30 tabs initiatives, state and local governments have jacked up vehicle taxes and fees — they’re now stuck to our $30 tabs like barnacles on the side of a ship. And I-976 gives voters the chance to scrape those barnacles off.

Vote Yes on I-976 and tell politicians you’re taxed out.

We’re working on #Round2 to expire the Democrats’ $27 billion tax increase and expire future new taxes after one year (unless voter approved).

When Karen and I sold off our family’s retirement fund and loaned $500K to the signature drive for our $30 Tabs Initiative, we had faith (

I have that same faith in I-1082 (

#Round2 puts those dirty dog politicians in Olympia on a short leash when they take our money without asking.
