Incredibly effective — the 2/3 works every time at protecting all taxpayers
Nothing is more effective at protecting taxpayers than the 2/3-for-taxes vote requirement.
In 2007, the voters reinstated the 2/3 with Initiative 960. And in 2008 and 2009, the Legislature didn’t raise a single tax. Not one.
In 2010, the Legislature got rid of the 2/3 and went hog wild, increasing taxes $6.7 billion.
So voters responded with I-1053 in 2010 and it passed overwhelmingly. In 2011 and 2012, the Legislature raised 2 relatively small taxes. That’s it.
In 2012, voters passed I-1185 and in 2013 and 2014, the Legislature didn’t raise taxes.
So with the 2/3, tax increases are a last resort. Without the 2/3, the Legislature goes hog wild.
The 2/3 works. It works every time.
This year’s Initiative 1325 is our chance to make it permanent. To enshrine the 2/3-for-taxes vote requirement in our state Constitution. Pass it one time and it’ll be for all time.
Two weeks from today is the deadline for signatures. Everyone has from now until Thursday, July 3rd — 15 days — to donate dollars and collect signatures to get this exciting initiative on the November ballot.
