RALLY FOR $30 TABS: Join me today, Puyallup Fair, 1-7pm,
We’re gonna get a ton of signatures today! Volunteers at the Pierce County Republican booth will be doggedly getting sigs and handing out petitions EVERY DAY at the Puyallup Fair.
I’m joining them today from 1-7pm.
Come on down and join me and other activities as we rally for $30 Tabs. It’s really fun. And if you can’t join us, then hit “reply” to this email and ask for petitions. Let me know how many you want, your name, address, city, and phone number. I’ll get you as many petitions as you want.
Last Friday, we got over 800 signatures in 6 hours at the GOP booth.
TIPS ON SIGNATURE GATHERING:
When I was at the fair last Friday, I got into a regular banter with potential signers. Here’s what I said:
“Are you a voter in Washington state, sir? Are you a voter in Washington state, young lady? We’re tryin’ to get our $30 Tabs Initiative on the ballot.”
“What’s that about?” many would ask.
“Ya know when you register your car, it’s really expensive? We’re trying to get an initiative on the ballot that’ll let voters across the state vote to get it down to $30. Voters have passed it 2 times before and this’ll be the 3rd.”
“Why do we have to do it again?”
“Our past initiatives got tabs down a lot and they were low for about 10 years. But in recent years state and local governments have really jacked ’em up a lot, so it’s time to cut ’em again. It’s like mowin’ the lawn. Just trying to get it on the ballot.”
“By signing it, all you’re doing is getting it on the ballot so voters can vote on it. Come on, it’ll just take a second, just trying to get it on the ballot.”
What’s the thing I say over and over again?
“We’re just trying to get it on the ballot.”
When collecting signatures, the goal is not to convince voters to vote for $30 tabs, the goal is to offer people the chance to sign a petition that lets the voters vote on $30 tabs.
$30 Tabs are popular, voting on $30 Tabs is even more popular.
A very good petitioner told me a long time ago: “Don’t pitch the issue, pitch the vote on the issue.”
Last Friday’s 6 hours at the GOP booth was a non-stop, wall-to-wall love-fest for $30 Tabs. And I’m sure today will be the same. And that’s great and good and positive.
But to get 300,000 signatures by the end of December, we all gotta embrace the grind. There are no shortcuts.
That’s what Tacoma’s Bob Henkel is doing. You may recall that he was the first of our supporters who reached 1000+ signatures and EARNED himself a bright orange $30 Tabs t-shirt. He spends a few hours each day driving from business to business in his local area, asking them to put petitions on their counters. And he picks up filled ones and replaces them with blank ones. He called me on Monday to tell me he has 46 full sheets FROM LAST WEEK ONLY. That’s 920 signatures in a week!! The guy’s an animal.
Be inspired by Bob and help us make this signature drive a success!
