Tim’s $500K loan: “I’ve sold off my family’s retirement fund for $30 Tabs Initiative”

It is, by far, the biggest risk I’ve ever taken.

But I have faith. I have faith that voters all across our state are super eager to sign petitions for our $30 Tabs Initiative. I have faith that voters will overwhelming pass it. I have faith that it’s carefully drafted to deliver the tax relief it requires.

And I have faith that our supporters — all of you — will help me raise the funds necessary to make this effort a historic success.

There’s a saying that has inspired me all my life:

“Leap … and a net will appear.”

But this is the highest cliff I’ve ever jumped off that requires the biggest net I’ve ever needed.

But it’s something I must do. Here’s why:

It was heartbreaking when our signature drive two years ago fell short.

It was a gut-punch when we didn’t make it last year either.

When such a popular initiative fails to qualify, it’s because the sponsor of the initiative failed to inspire others to help.

For months afterwards, I thought about it. I prayed about it. I talked it through with my wife about it. I’ve been pursuing this policy goal for 20 years and I had a choice: either walk away from it and let state

I’m all in.

Where did my $500K come from? After graduating from Washington State University with a business degree, I had a pretty successful mail order company that marketed fraternity watches. During the next decade, while I was in my 20’s, I worked really hard and was able to squirrel away some of my money into an investment account (stocks, mutual funds, etc). It’s now worth around $600,000. Up to now, Karen and I have had it earmarked for our retirement. But we’re selling off $500K of it and loaning that $500K to the campaign to kick-start the signature drive.

That $500K — which is half of what we need overall — has allowed us to hire paid petitioners IMMEDIATELY and they’re all over the state RIGHT NOW collecting signatures — and those voter signatures are pouring in.

From Rick Walther, one of the paid petitioners:

“1881 $30 tabs signatures collected in four days in Puyallup!!! I also broke my single-day record for total signatures collected in a single day (644). It was absolutely mind-blowing!! $30 tabs is my favorite petition that I’ve ever worked in all of the 13 years I’ve been doing this! I don’t care what the other petitions are paying, as long as I got $30 tabs it’s going on the top of my stack!!”

I’m hearing that from everyone out there.

We launched the signature drive for Initiative 976 on April 13 and we have until the end of the December to raise the funds necessary to get this over the finish line.
