Today we kick-off the signature drive for the Property Tax Fairness Initiative

by | Feb 1, 2017

We are absolutely thrilled with the overwhelmingly positive feedback we’re getting on this year’s initiative.  The Property Tax Fairness Initiative is a bold, exciting proposal that helps everyone.

Today we kick-off the signature drive for the Property Tax Fairness Initiative.

The official petition for Initiative 1550 appears here (click on it to enlarge it and see the front & back):

Petitions will be printed and mailed out in the coming weeks.  But to succeed, we need a fast start so we ask you not to wait.  You can print up petitions locally and get started immediately.  The important thing is that petitions be printed on 11″x17″ paper (any thickness), be printed front and back, and be printed in color or black-and-white (either works fine).

Voters are more than happy to sign petitions, but they need someone to ask them to.  Put a petition in their hands and say “Help us make property taxes fairer — sign this so we can let the voters decide.”

      Here’s what it does:

*  The Property Tax Fairness Initiative makes property taxes fairer by providing a meaningful, permanent 25% across-the-board reduction in the property tax burden (voter-approved levies, including local school levies, are not affected).  Taxpayers need a break.

*  The Property Tax Fairness Initiative makes property taxes fairer by capping property tax increases at 1% per year.  If governments want more than that, the only way is by asking voters’ permission at a high turnout general election.

*  The Property Tax Fairness Initiative makes property taxes fairer by eliminating the personal property tax.  When you buy personal property and pay sales taxes on it, it’s not fair to have it be double- or triple-taxed with a recurring, burdensome personal property tax too.  Our initiative ends that unfairness.

The Property Tax Fairness Initiative is all about making property taxes fairer.

Voters support these policies BIG TIME:

35% Strongly support    > 63% yes
28% Somewhat support  >
13% Somewhat oppose   > 26% no
13% Strongly oppose      >
12% Not sure                  > 12% not sure

We have from now until early July — 5 months — to collect over 300,000 voter signatures!!  It’s a huge challenge but the benefits are incredibly positive.
