Watch 2 minute video of Eyman ripping state income tax bill in Olympia yesterday

by | Apr 21, 2015

Yesterday, I drove from Mukilteo in Snohomish County to Olympia for a 1:30 pm hearing on bill imposing a massive new state income tax.

Here’s the 2 minute video of my testimony (it should automatically start at 02:08:00):

In case you can’t watch that video, here’s the statement I was reading from:

Just a few years ago, voters overwhelmingly rejected a state income tax.  Voters crushed Initiative 1098 at the ballot box with a 64% NO vote.  It lost in every county, including King.

The people repudiated it.

Nonetheless, House and Senate Democrats are ignoring that citizen mandate and sponsoring bills imposing a new state income tax.  You’re calling it a “capital gains tax” but it’s the same thing.  The only way to impose this new tax is for the state government, for the first time in Washington’s history, to collect the personal tax returns of all its’ citizens.

That is a Pandora’s box that we must never allow Olympia to open.  If this bill passes, this tax will morph into a state income tax and it will be imposed on everyone.

This morning, the governor’s budget office reported this bill’s 7% rate is a $5.7 billion tax increase.

That is a crazy high tax increase.

When voters vetoed the income tax, they rejected the ugly politics of envy, resentment, and class warfare.  It’s just not how most Americans think or feel.  Successful people are not the enemy.  Divisive efforts to demonize them don’t work.  They are heroes, not villains.  They are the job creators who provide the fuel for our economy’s growth.  They are role models who deserve a pat on the shoulder, not a knife in the back.  Our state and our society benefits from appreciating and encouraging our entrepreneurs and risk-takers.  Voters don’t support stealing their earned achievements.

As Lincoln said:  “You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.  You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.  You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.  You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatreds.”

Voters embrace a positive, hopeful, we’re-all-Americans attitude.  And that’s really inspiring.  And that’s why Senate Bill 6102 should be rejected.

The people have consistently sent a clear no-new-taxes mandate.  Citizens see a bloated government riding in the wagon constantly complaining that the people aren’t pulling hard enough.  Governments need to stop taxing-and-spending and start reforming-and-prioritizing using existing revenue.

— END —

After my testimony, I was asked some questions by a couple of senators.  You might find the 4 minutes of Q&A interesting:

It’s nuts that Olympia is pushing so many tax hikes this year.  The House wants to impose and authorize $43 billion in higher taxes and the Senate is countering with $26 billion.  And all Governor Inslee can do is mimic Billy Idol and say “More, more, more.”

But this is what happens in Olympia when there isn’t a 2/3 vote requirement for tax increases.

I traveled to Olympia to testify, but really, the only effective way to fight back against this tax-hiking insanity is by helping us get the 2/3-For-Taxes Constitutional Amendment Initiative on the ballot.  This is the most exciting, impactful, needed initiative we’ve ever done.  Voters clearly need permanent protection from Olympia’s insatiable tax appetite.

Success is the only option with the signature drive for I-1366.  Please help us make it happen.
