Why Zeiger Supported Democrats’ SB 5224

by | Feb 9, 2019

Hidden microphone recorded what Inslee said to Zeiger:

“I need more Republicans like you, Hans.

You’re a bigger tax raiser than liberal Democrats like Sam Hunt and Reuven Carlyle. You’re my favorite Republican!”

Voters have 4 times passed initiatives requiring tax advisory votes. Not only do they allow voters to vote on tax increases, they transform the voters pamphlet into a tax increase report card. Every time Olympia raises our taxes, millions of voters can look in the November voters pamphlet and learn which taxes were increased, how much they’ll cost, and how legislators voted on them http://tinyurl.com/TaxIncreaseReportCard).

Thanks to tax advisory votes, we know that 19 tax increases were imposed by the Legislature and signed into law by Inslee. The state budget office confirms they’ll cost us $23.8 billion.

Of those 19, “Republican” Hans Zeiger from Pierce County voted for 16 of them. That’s 85% of them. His tax votes cost taxpayers $18.7 billion. That’s 80% of the total.

By way of comparison, votes by liberal Democrat Reuven Carlyle from Seattle cost taxpayers $10.7 billion and liberal Democrat Sam Hunt from Olympia $10.9 billion. That’s just 45% of the total.

Undeniably and mathematically, Hans Zeiger is a bigger tax raiser than liberal Democrats. No wonder Inslee shook his hand.

And it certainly explains why Zeiger voted for SB 5224. As the Seattle newspaper “The Stranger” reported: “On Wednesday, the bill was passed through the committee with support from Republican state senator Hans Zeiger. Good going in this one respect, Hans!” (https://www.thestranger.com/slog/2019/02/06/38675324/we-can-end-tim-eymans-stupid-advisory-votes).

As soon as I saw that, I sent out this update talking about how Democrats need turncoat Republicans to pass tax increases (https://mailchi.mp/a5082305d4ba/democrats-need-turncoat-republicans-to-take-away-your-right-to-vote-they-found-one).

I encouraged all of you to contact Zeiger by email, phone, text.

This constituent’s email to him caught my eye: “WHAT WAS HE THINKING????”

I wondered the same thing. So I went to the Secretary of State’s website and looked at those 19 tax advisory votes in the voters pamphlets. And I learned that Zeiger voted for 16 of them. And that his tax votes cost taxpayers $18.7 billion.

That’s what he was thinking when he voted for SB 5224. He doesn’t want his tax votes in the voters pamphlet.

Zeiger thinks playing patty-cake with liberals and voting for their bills will shield him from Democrat attacks at election time. How’d that work out for the last Republican who tried that?

Ironically, this is one of the images that appears when you google: Hans Zeiger pictures. Seattle Times: http://tinyurl.com/FainAccusedOfRape — “Fain, a politically moderate Republican from Auburn … was one of four Republican senators who voted to legalize same-sex marriage in 2012 and helped negotiate a bipartisan deal for the 2017 paid family-leave law.”

Tell Zeiger what you think about his turncoat treachery:

Send him an email (cut & paste in the “To” line):
hans.zeiger@leg.wa.gov; hans@hanszeiger.com; tim_eyman@comcast.net

Text or call his cell: 253-905-8160

Call his office (leave a message): 360-786-7648

But expressing your disgust with him isn’t enough.

All 147 legislators are thinking about how to vote on SB 5224. They need to hear from you.

Forward your email to Zeiger to all 147 legislators (with a message to them from you at the top).

In the Subject line, cut and paste this: I’m disgusted with Hans Zeiger’s support for SB 5224 — I like having my voters pamphlet serve as a tax increase report card and I don’t like legislators keeping their tax votes secret — don’t take away my right to know what Olympia is doing to me.
