Every year, legislators in Olympia are inundated with messages from the folks riding in the wagon telling the Legislature to raise taxes. The people pulling the wagon — our supporters — are way too busy working for a living to drive for hours to and from Olympia to attend & participate & testify in weekday/workday public hearings.
So the deck is completely stacked against taxpayers.
But this year, we gave our supporters who are business leaders, workers, family members, and seniors — you know, normal people — the chance to communicate directly with all 147 legislators with a clear, concise “don’t-raise-our-taxes” message.
All of you who emailed legislators — resulting in hundreds of email messages each time — helped level the playing field.
* Hundreds of you each week consistently told legislators about the burden that Sound Transit 3’s $54 billion pig-out made further tax hikes unaffordable and unacceptable.
* Hundreds of you each week vividly reminded legislators that nearly 2/3 of voters at the ballot box have repeatedly made it clear that they oppose higher taxes.
* Hundreds of you each week hammered home that taxpayers’ oppose a new income tax, loath a new capital gains tax, reject a carbon tax, hate higher business taxes, and despise skyrocketing car tab taxes.
* Hundreds of you each week demanded that Democrat legislators from outside Seattle not succumb to Seattle’s values. Washington is not Seattle and too many Democrat legislators forget that. You helped them remember.
Most importantly, you reminded legislators that regular citizens are watching them. Government almost always does the wrong thing when normal people aren’t paying attention. But when the spotlight is on, when normal people are engaged, and when those normal people clearly and overwhelmingly communicate their opposition to higher taxes, legislators know that they’re skating on thin ice.
Republicans in the House and Senate have been rock-solid on a no-new-taxes agenda. Your hundreds of emails each week bolstered these legislators’ confidence, reinforcing them and reminding them that they’re on the right track.
Inslee and House and Senate Democrats have been horrible, dragging things out, forcing special session after special session, because of their irrational, hyper-obsession with raising taxes. Your hundreds of emails each week reminded the Democrats from outside Seattle that their constituents don’t support them raising taxes.
YOU REALLY HELPED. YOU MADE A HUGE DIFFERENCE. When the final budget is announced later this week, you should feel a great deal of pride and satisfaction that, in the tug of war over taxes, all of us together pulled the rope HARD in the taxpayers’ direction.
