STOP ALL INCOME TAXES: we will be promoting attorney Joel Ard’s initiative because it’s the best one. We trust his legal mind more than anyone else’s.

We can’t rely on the state supreme court to uphold the lower court’s ruling on Inslee’s capital gains income tax (full explanation here).

The only way to kill off all current and future taxes based on personal income is with an initiative.

Many initiatives were filed this year that do that.

We looked at all of them (ours, Jim Walsh’s, others).

But after reviewing attorney Joel Ard’s Initiative 1499 — which he filed appropriately on April 15 — the choice is clear: we are promoting his initiative (we have from now until Dec 30 to collect signatures to qualify it).

As Ronald Reagan was fond of saying: “There’s no limit to the amount of good you can do if you don’t care who gets the credit.”

Joel’s legal analysis of last year’s efforts really clinched it for us.

Here’s the critical excerpt from it:

* “The initiative highlights throughout that it bans imposition of taxes based on personal income, ‘whether called income taxes, payroll taxes, or excise taxes.’ It explicitly identifies, in the ballot title and content, a specific, unique, first-time-ever state excise tax that is ‘based on personal income’ (recently passed 2021 c 196 (Engrossed Substitute Senate Bill No. 5096) s 5). In order to fully implement a ban on such taxes, it must also repeal the only current state wide implementation of such a tax.”

We trust Joel’s legal mind more than anyone else’s (read about one of his supreme court victories here).

Last year’s initiative was sponsored by Jim Walsh and it was great.

Last year’s initiative didn’t qualify because we started late (September).

This year, we’re starting much earlier (so we’ll have May, June, July, Aug, Sept, Oct, Nov, & Dec to collect signatures).

And since Joel’s I-1499 is an initiative to the legislature, if we flip the house and senate and get the Republicans a majority in both chambers, they can pass the initiative into law AND INSLEE CAN’T VETO IT!

This is our ONLY opportunity to kill off these income-based taxes NOW AND IN THE FUTURE.

This is our ONLY chance to get this critically important initiative qualified (Initiative 1929 imploded because all the high-paid consultants gobbled up all the money — once those vultures were done, there was nothing left for the signature drive).

Cost to qualify I-1499: $1.5 million (the I-1929 campaign told donors they needed $19 million).

Over the past 22 years, I’ve qualified 16 statewide initiatives — the average spent to qualify: $672,000. During that same time frame, there were 44 statewide initiatives qualified by others — their average was $1.2 million. 

To get that many signatures (400K) by the Dec 30th deadline, we NEED everyone’s help, including a handful of “Mike Dunmires.”

In a 2005 edition of the Puget Sound Business Journal, super supporter Mike Dunmire explained why he donated so much: “Washington’s been good to me, and I’ve been looking for a way to give something back, said Dunmire, 70. “Eyman is the only one out there who actually gets things done. Everybody talks,” Dunmire added, “but Eyman is all about action and getting in the trenches to fight for real solutions. The guy’s got guts, he takes the hits, and lets the voters decide. That’s appealing to me.” … Dunmire said he is willing to give more. “The limit is how long I live,” he said. “I call it public policy philanthropy — I’m not doing it for me, I’m doing it for the betterment of the state I live in and love.” 

We need everyone to work really hard to help us find some Mike Dunmires to make I-1499 a reality. We NEED successful folks who are willing to break open their piggy banks to protect themselves and all of us from any kind of income tax NOW AND FOREVER.
